It’s Heart Month Take Down Your Wall

In honour of Heart Month, let’s all take on increasing our self love. While physical exercise is good for your heart organ, love and appreciation nourish your emotional heart.

One of my biggest challenges in life has been to take down the wall I put up around my heart to keep from getting hurt. When I was a teenager, I naїvely thought that would protect me. It took me years to figure out it doesn’t at all. It keeps out love and does nothing to prevent being hurt.

There’s no risk-free way to love. The possibility of being devastated is always there, but the possibility of joy only exists when you put your battered heart right on the table by trusting that you’re lovable.—Martha Beck, Daily Coach Tips

False beliefs are often the foundation of the wall and I believe the most common of those is the belief that there is something wrong with us. It appears to be part of the human condition to believe this at some level for some period of time. The result is we create a protective coating around our hearts causing us to cover up, hide out, and feel shame, doubt, fear, bravado etc.; all ways of shielding ourselves from being found out as less than and being hurt.

What I have found to be true is if I am willing to be authentic and just be myself, people love and appreciate me far more than they ever did when the wall was up. I find other’s authenticity attractive too.

Reflective Questions:
1. What is one belief of not being good enough you would be willing to let go of this month?
2. In what ways would your life be different if you let this go?

  1. First off I want to say fantastic blog! I had a quick question that I’d like to ask if you do not mind. I was curious to know how you center yourself and clear your thoughts before writing. I have had difficulty clearing my mind in getting my thoughts out there. I do take pleasure in writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are usually wasted simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any ideas or hints? Thanks!

  2. Hi Joanna,
Thank you for the compliment. I have different ways to get started on my writing. Sometimes I am inspired by a quote and I let that percolate a while inside my head and then I write. Other times I get out my pictures of my ‘board of directors”, all people who inspire me, and connect with their energy and wait for ideas to begin to flow. Many times I just start to write and let all my ideas flow out. Then I go back and rearrange and edit once the creative flow slows or stops.
I hope that’s been helpful for you.
    Warmest regards,
    Rosemary
